Gay Pastor Apologizes After Lying About Homophobic Slur On Whole Foods Cake

An openly gay Texas pastor apologized Monday, admitting to concocting a story that Whole Foods employees defaced his cake with an anti-gay slur, reports The New York Times.

Pastor Jordan Brown, founder of the Church of Open Doors in Austin, said in a statement that the grocery chain “did nothing wrong. I was wrong to pursue this matter and use the media to perpetuate this story.”

He dropped his lawsuit against the retail giant, and “also apologized to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community ‘for diverting attention from real issues,’” the report says.

Brown asked for a cake reading “Love Wins,” but allegedly received one that read “Love Wins F-g.” Brown then took to a since-removed YouTube post to speak on the incident and display the cake. He promptly filed a discrimination lawsuit, prompting a countersuit from Whole Foods.

From The Times:

Whole Foods said in a statement on Monday that it would drop its lawsuit.

“We’re very pleased that the truth has come to light,” it said. “Given Mr. Brown’s apology and public admission that his story was a complete fabrication, we see no reason to move forward with our countersuit to defend the integrity of our brand and team members.”

Brown also apologized to the bakery associate who came under scrutiny, his partner, his lawyer, and the church.
