CHARLOTTE—Former NFL coach Sam Wyche is out of surgery and recovering, according to his friend Dr. Ronald Wade’s Facebook page.
Wade said the surgery took 4 and a half hours yesterday.
A match was found around 7:30 p.m. Monday.
Wyche doesn’t know the donor or the circumstances surrounding the donation, but he’s eternally grateful, a Facebook post said.
Wyche is a former Furman quarterback. He coached the Cincinnati Bengals and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and is known for introducing the use of the no-huddle offense as a standard offense.
He also spent time as a volunteer coach for Pickens High School.
Wyche is in the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame, the South Carolina Football Hall of Fame, the Furman University Athletic Hall of Fame and the Minor Pro Football Hall of Fame.
