CNN was hoping that Charles Barkley could provide a spark to their primetime programming, though it hasn’t gone as planned.
On Monday, CNN announced that its weekly news show featuring Charles Barkley and Gayle King was being canceled.
The show had been on the air for six months. CNN said that it was just a limited run show.
“King Charles has come to the end of its limited run as we announced when it launched last fall and was a great addition to CNN’s lineup, with the youngest, most affluent, and most diverse P2+ audience in its cable news time period,” the network said.
According to the New York Post, the show failed to deliver big ratings.
Since debuting in November, “King Charles” viewership fell 20%. The first airing was watched by 500,000 total viewers and 139,000 in the advertiser-coveted 25-54 age demographic, according to Nielsen.
The show’s Jan. 31 episode failed to crack the 100,000 viewer threshold in the 25-54 demo — the first time it couldn’t reach the six-figure mark, Nielsen numbers show.
Barkley, who signed a longterm deal with Turner Sports, will have no problem staying busy, as he’ll continue to cover the NBA for TNT.
