Police estimate more than 2,000 people turned out yesterrday to downtown Greenville to take part in the nationwide March For Our Lives.

Some held signs, others chanted and sang “We Shall Overcome” as they marched down Main Street.

“We’re tired of it and we need to speak out. If our voices are loud enough, something is going to get done,” said senior Abbie Legrande.

March for Our Lives is an anti-gun-violence rally organized by students, that drew hundreds of thousands of protesters to downtown Washington, D.C. Similar crowds turned out at sister marches in cities all across the country.

Another March for Our Lives event started at noon at the Anderson County Courthouse. A couple of hundred people rallied in front of the courthouse by carrying signs and encouraging passing cars to honk their horns for support. Several students from Southwood Middle School, Westside High School and T.L. Hanna High School participated in the march.

Second Amendment rights picketers also gathered in downtown Greenville yesterday.

Sally Eastman filed a notice of intent to picket in downtown Greenville on the day of the March for Our Lives. Eastman expected 50 people to participate in the picketing in the vicinity of One Plaza.

Despite the estimate, fewer than a dozen people turned out to picket.
