After playing the role of underdog all season long, the Philadelphia Eagles can now call themselves world champions, as they defeated the New England Patriots, 41-33, Sunday to win their first Super Bowl in franchise history in one of the league’s highest scoring championship games.

The teams combined for 1,152 yards of offense yesterday, the most in any NFL game, regular or postseason. The 74 points scored are second only to Super Bowl XXIX, when the San Francisco 49ers and San Diego Chargers combined for 75 points.

Eagles quarterback Nick Foles was named the game’s Most Valuable Player, going 28-for-43 for 373 yards and three touchdown passes and catching one of his own. Foles became the first quarterback to win a Super Bowl after starting the season as a back up since Tom Brady did it for New England in 2001.

The Eagles held the lead for much of the first half, but the game’s turning point came with 0:38 remaining, when Foles caught a 1-yard pass from tight end Trey Burton to give Philadelphia a 22-12 lead at halftime.

The Patriots responded by scoring touchdowns on their first three drives of the second half, taking their first lead of the game with 9:22 remaining in the fourth quarter when quarterback Tom Brady hit tight end Rob Gronkowski for a 4-yard touchdown to make it 33-32.

The Eagles followed that with a 14-play, 75-yard drive that ended with an 11-yard touchdown pass from Foles to tight end Zach Ertz, giving Philadelphia a 38-33 lead. Ertz’s touchdown proved to be the game winner, as kicker Jake Elliott added a 46-yard field goal to make it 41-33.
