DETROIT — The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, is “gravely ill,” according to reports.
Franklin is in hospice care, CNN and Agence France-Presse reported Monday night, citing unnamed sources.
WDIV reporter Evrod Cassimy tweeted Monday morning that family members confirmed the news to him.
“I am so saddened to report that the Queen of Soul and my good friend, Aretha Franklin is gravely ill. I spoke with her family members this morning. She is asking for your prayers at this time. I’ll have more details as I’m allowed to release,” a message read.
This follows an earlier report from Roger Friedman’s Showbiz 411: “Aretha is surrounded by family and people close to her. She will be so missed as a mother, sister, friend, cousin. But her legacy is larger than life.”
Franklin was diagnosed with cancer in 2010 and turned 76 in March. Her last performance was on Nov. 2, 2017 for the Elton John AIDS Foundation in New York.
